MAUBOURGUET

Maubourguet which is situated 25km north of Tarbes, 45km from Pau and roughly 150km from Toulouse. This places Maubourguet 1 hour and a half from  the white sand of the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and one hour from the snow of the ski stations in the  Pyrenees. It is also the gateway to the Gascon bastide villages and the Madiran vineyards.  

Currently with a population of 2500 habitants Maubourguet is in full expansion. The canton comprising 11 communes (Auriebat, Caussade-Riviere, Estirac, Labatut-Riviere, Lafitole, Lahitte-Toupiere, Larreule, Sauveterre, Sombrun, Vidouze and Maubourguet) have been regrouped under the name of  Val d'Adour. 

Val d'Adour

Primarily an agicultural community Maubourguet is also known as a Station Verte de Vacances offering camping, gites, hotels and chambre d'hôtes in a country environment.  On the route de St Jacques de Compostela pilgrims can be seen passing through Maubourguet on foot and sometimes with horses and donkeys on their pilgrimage to Spain. 

Dating back to 11thC it was the seat of a prieuré bénédictin; fortified by the English in the 14th C and ravaged by  the protestants in the 16th C.
